Title: BFA Thesis Exhibition
Client: Academic Work
Role: Art Direction, Design, Illustration &#38; Printing
Project: Cohesive Body of Work for Senior Thesis

Thesis:
"Through graphic design we have to ability to show people how things are and let them decide if and why they have a hand in deciding how things could be.

My BFA Thesis exhibition was realized by creating Eleventh Effort. Eleventh Effort is a creative endeavor specializing in Graphic Design and Art Direction. With a not-for-profit focus, Eleventh Effort strives to serve the local community by providing individuals and organizations with thought-provoking design solutions that have a meaningful and positive impact.

The name Eleventh Effort comes from the eleventh commandment: love your neighbor. The name stands for a philosophy and way of life. From those three words, Eleventh Effort assumes it's identity and intent.

The pieces that I created for the exhibition each represent the elements that came together to form Eleventh Effort. Each print was applied to plywood by hand, using acrylic inks and screen printing techniques.

		<description>Info

The Basics
I was born in Maine, raised in South Florida, went to high school in Orlando, Florida, completed university in Southwest Michigan with a one-year stint in Valencia, Spain. I travel a lot. I am anxious to learn. I am excited about what comes next.

I am a recent graduate. During my years at university, I was fortunate to have opportunities to learn from some great people. I participated in internships with Andrews University, Richard Harrison Bailey / The Agency and Thesis. I also learned about people and culture by studying in Valencia, Spain and participating in tours through India and South America.

Currently I am a freelance graphic designer and a independent screen printer. I am loving every minute of it.

Blog Details
I just created BEN CHILD DOT TUMBLR, a blog that is closely tied to my portfolio site. If you're an RSS person or just want to keep tabs, this will be a great one to bookmark because I can now post directly from the tumblr app on my iPhone.

News &#38; Updates

It's Better Together: Small Business Accounting Tips

&#60;img src="http://www.itsbettertogether.net/images/itsbettertogether.png"/&#62;

Tonight I had a well overdue meeting with some of the local creative community. Thanks to It's Better Together, a group of local creatives whom work with other professionals in the wedding industry, for hosting a great meeting at Seven Sisters Coffee House.

Got a load of great tips from Peter Nieves, CPA, P.A. about how independent creative professional should handle taxes and accounting.

Now I'm all set to be a legit, tax-paying designer. Should be exciting. Stay tuned…

Work Completed &#38; Location Photoshoot

I have to thank Thesis for another chance to work with them in their studio. I finished another project with them Friday. It's always great to get into the studio with them and enjoy Three Oaks.

I'm really excited about starting my next project too. I'm flying down to Florida for a few days to kick start a project with a four day photo shoot for a client that I will be posting more about in the month to come. Check back soon!

5.15.09
I'm going to camp!

&#60;img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/1117/14527/home_header_bg.jpg" border="0" width="650" height="250" align="left" /&#62;

I just found out today from Firebelly Design that I have made the cut for their 10-day design charrette called Camp Firebelly.

Here's an excerpt from the site:
"Camp Firebelly started as a way to connect fresh talent with nonprofits in need. The collaborative environment is intense but offers an incredible opportunity to learn firsthand what professional life is like through the socially responsible vision of Firebelly Design."

4.16.09
Just did a re-shoot of my work for my printed portfolio. Thanks to Dave Sherwin for letting me use his studio for a while. Here are a couple of the setup and process. Keep a lookout for the updates that will be making their way onto the site shortly.

4.13.09
Last Thursday was the opening reception for Eleventh Effort, my BFA Senior Graphic Design Exhibition. Things went really great! Everyone seemed to receive it well and had incredible things to say about the outcome of everything. It even seems that I might sell a couple of the pieces. The thought of selling any of the work never even crossed my mind, so that alone is a small success. Thanks to everyone that came out, and enjoy some of the images from the night in the slideshow below.

Title: Objects of Creation
Client: Personal Work
Role: Art Direction &#38; Design
Project: 3-part Commentary Series

These two color prints combine animals with specific words that portray their role and/or value to society. The idea behind them is to realize how society devalues people, animals, ideals and beliefs by objectifying them. Do you see any correlation between the terms and your perception of these animals?

Award Winner: Andrews University Best of Show 2008

Note: 3-color screen print on found newspapers.
